Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need To Create a Silver Bullion account?

Yes. You need to create a basic account with Silver Bullion. To unlock the ability to buy or sell S.T.A.R. Grams, you are also required to upgrade to a S.T.A.R. Storage Account. There are therefore two steps to complete before you can access S.T.A.R. Gram transactions.

How Do I Upgrade my account to a S.T.A.R. storage account?

You can go to the S.T.A.R. Storage page and register for a S.T.A.R. Storage account. You must be a minimum of 18 years old to open a personal account.

What are the different types of accounts in S.T.A.R. Storage?

You will need to decide on the type of account to buy and sell S.T.A.R. Grams – personal and joint.

a)Personal Account: Account for a single individual.
b)Joint Account: Joint accounts are registered in the names of two individuals under joint tenancy with rights of survivorship.

For company or trust account, currently both are not available.

What does S.T.A.R. in S.T.A.R. Storage stand for?

S.T.A.R. stands for Secure, Tax Free, Allocated and Reserved.

How do I update my phone number? E-mail address? Bank account number?

To update personal or joint account details such as your e-mail address or your phone number, please click the “Edit” icon. Do note that you will be required to complete a one-time identity verification to confirm these changes.

What if somebody gets a hold of my username and password, and buys or sells metals on my behalf?

Any S.T.A.R. Storage transaction such as a buy or sell order or modifying personal information will trigger a notification sent to your email. Should you receive such a notification, but you have not initiated it, change your password and contact us immediately. Every buy or sell order is reviewed by a Silver Bullion officer before an order confirmation is sent out or, depending on the situation, we will void the order.

Please note that the system is intentionally designed so that there is very little for a potential hacker to gain even if they were able to access your account.

What if I do not get to read these notification e-mails in time and then someone instructs you to wire the money into their bank account?

The S.T.A.R. Storage system is designed to allow funds to be transferred back only into your own linked bank account. Therefore, the worst-case scenario would entail funds being returned to your bank account. Furthermore, each transaction is reviewed by a Silver Bullion officer and for some transactions two officers. We might contact you to confirm a transaction or changes made to your S.T.A.R. Storage profile to make sure that the changes were as per your request.

For any change in sensitive data like phone number, email address, linked bank account and BTC address will require a change request with a video verification call to ensure that the owner of the account is initiating the change in sensitive data.

Is my connection secure?

Once you log into your Silver Bullion profile, your connection is encrypted using industry standard encryption (denoted by “https” in the URL) certificates similar to those used by banks to reinforce connection privacy and security.

Is Two-factor Authentication (2FA) available?

Yes. You can set up Two-factor Authentication (2FA) on your S.T.A.R. Storage account - using SMS or Time-based One-time Passwords (TOTP) using an authenticator app.

To begin setting up 2FA on your account, go to your account “Settings” page and click “Enable” in the Two-factor Authentication section. With a verified S.T.A.R. Storage account and the correct mobile number registered with us, click the “Verify” button next to your mobile number to begin the SMS verification process.

1) 2FA by SMS

Click the “SMS Text Message” button at the Two-factor Authentication section of the “Settings” page.

2) 2FA by an authenticator app

This is a more secure 2FA option than SMS. It requires downloading a third-party authenticator app that generates a time-based one-time password (TOTP). This password is local to your mobile phone and does not communicate with the outside world. It is also refreshed after some seconds have passed to ensure that generated passwords are unique.

You can use any preferred authenticator app. If you are setting up TOTP 2FA for the first time, you can consider the following to begin with:

a)1: Google Authenticator (commonly used)
b)2: Authy (if you want the TOTP codes to sync between devices)
c)3: and OTP (if you prefer open source)

With the authenticator app downloaded onto your mobile phone, click the “Use Auth App” button on the Two-factor Authentication section in your account setting.

A QR code will be generated on the next page. Scanning this QR code with your authenticator app will result in a password generated by the app. Enter this code in the field at step 2 on the page with the QR code and click the “Enable” button.

On the next page, please enter the codes sent to the phone number and email registered in your S.T.A.R. Storage account in the 2 respective fields. Then click “Verify”.

TOTP 2FA is now set up on your account. You will be prompted to enter the code from your authenticator app whenever you login to your account or perform transactions that require this further verification step.

What is Passkey and is Passkey available?

A passkey is a security feature that protects your account. Once enabled, you will need to verify your identity with a passkey when logging in or performing sensitive actions. A passkey replaces your traditional password with a faster, more secure login method. You can quickly verify your identity using your fingerprint, face recognition, or screen lock.

To begin setting up Passkey on your account, go to your account “Settings” page and click “Add Passkey” in the Passkey section. Choose where you would like to save your passkey. The options and instructions displayed may vary depending on your device, browser and operating system. Once the setup is complete, Passkey Authentication will display ENABLED.

Please be noted that only create and save a passkey on a personal or trusted device. Do not save a passkey on a shared or public device.

Besides Silver Bullion, who checks that the bars backing my S.T.A.R. Grams are truly stored at the Vault, and that my ownership is correctly assigned as stated on my invoice?

There are three independent entities vault operators, independent bullion auditors, and financial auditors that confirm each bar backing S.T.A.R. Grams is stored at the specified facility and that ownership percentages are correctly assigned. We also provide a photograph of each stored bullion bar, downloadable as a report from our website.

a)1: Vault Operator(s) perform physical inspections and release bar inventory reports, checked against the Gramchain ownership register at least twice a week. Both the Gramchain records and the vault operators’ bar list are posted online and can be viewed by S.T.A.R. Grams clients.
b)2: Independent bullion auditors perform an audit of all bars backing S.T.A.R. Grams at least once every three months. Silver Bullion has contracted Bureau Veritas (formerly Inspectorate), an internationally accredited inspection company with over 6,000 employees worldwide, to perform these audits and provide a certificate downloadable from your S.T.A.R. Grams account.
c)3: Foo Kon Tan LLP (member of HLB International) randomly check the physical presence of bars with the vault operator, independently check bank statements and cashflows with the banks, and review S.T.A.R. Grams ownership records against tax invoices, purchase orders, and delivery orders.

Silver Bullion (Hong Kong) Limited acts as your agent; in keeping with our commitment to exclusive Singapore jurisdiction over the entire storage chain, the underlying vaulting, audits, and Gramchain ownership records sit within Silver Bullion’s Singapore-based framework, maintained by Silver Bullion Pte Ltd and made available to you online through Gramchain in a transparent manner, controlled by independent accountants and financial auditors:

a)1: Independent Approved Accountants review and control the Gramchain ownership records, matching each bar’s recorded ownership percentages against tax invoices, purchase orders, and delivery orders and their respective monetary receipts and disbursements. Tax invoice falsification is a criminal, not civil, matter in Singapore, so this process is taken very seriously by all parties.
b)2: Foo Kon Tan LLP (member of HLB International) independently check the physical presence of bars with the vault operator, independently check bank statements and cashflows with the banks, and review Gramchain ownership records against tax invoices, purchase orders, and delivery orders.

Who have access to my personal profile information?

Your profile information is accessible only by Silver Bullion officers and the financial auditors. None of this information is released to third parties unless required by law.

There is no legal obligation on Silver Bullion to any foreign government, including any foreign tax authority, regulator or any foreign public authority to provide information on any customers or any transactions performed under the S.T.A.R. Storage Agreement.

From a regulatory standpoint in Singapore, bullion kept through S.T.A.R. Storage is not considered a financial product but a physical good and does not fall under the reporting requirements typical for financial products. Vault operators and bullion auditors process information with the anonymous S.T.A.R. Owner ID.

How do I know that the bars backing my S.T.A.R. Grams is genuine?

S.T.A.R. Grams represent fractional ownership of fully allocated bullion held within Silver Bullion’s bulk storage holdings.

These bullions come from the foundries/refineries in sealed bullion packaging and can be traced back to their origin. In rare cases where bars do not come directly from the refinery, they undergo an assay by the primary distributor. Upon arrival, the bars are weighed an implied density check and, where applicable, repackaged into sealed, tamper-proof parcel bags by at least two vault operator officers under CCTV surveillance. X-rays of the shipment are also performed as a security precaution upon entering the storage facility. Thus genuinity is addressed by:

a)Source: we only market the most liquid and established brand name bullion.
b)Traceability: the bullion is arriving either directly from the mint / foundry or in rare cases, the bullion was bought back by dealers and re-assayed by our supplier.
c)Weight check: and thus implicit density check upon arrival.
d)Audit: by London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) approved auditors.
e)Optional: We also do optional DUX Tests. (DUX Testing is mandatory for all transferred in bullion).

Can the customer holdings of the allocated metal S.T.A.R. Grams be auditable?

The allocated gold is regularly audited by professionals; it is also publicly auditable by you through our online gold explorer. Using this gold explorer, you can track every gold bar backing our accounts with all details and even photos.

A joint account holder is currently in vegetative state or is now of unsound mind. How can I be solely empowered to control the account?

If a joint account holder is in a vegetative state or has been declared of unsound mind, the remaining account holder cannot automatically take full control. Silver Bullion requires a court-issued order confirming the individual’s incapacity before making any changes to the account.

For Hong Kong-based clients, if the affected account holder had executed an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) prior to losing mental capacity, the appointed attorney may manage their financial affairs, though Silver Bullion may still require additional documentation before any account changes are made. If no EPA exists, the family will need to apply to the Court of First Instance for the appointment of a Committee under the Mental Health Ordinance to manage the individual’s property and financial affairs. As with all cases involving incapacity, we advise clients to consult a lawyer to determine the appropriate legal process.

For foreign clients, legal processes depend on their home country. Foreign court orders or legal documents must be notarized, legalized, or apostilled before they can be recognized in Singapore. It is advisable to consult a lawyer to ensure compliance with both local and Singaporean requirements.

Once the necessary documents are submitted, Silver Bullion will review them and proceed accordingly.

How does the Transfer On Death (TOD) feature work?

When you enable the Transfer on Death instruction in your Personal Account, you are taking a proactive step to simplify the asset distribution process for your beneficiaries. This is achieved by establishing a straightforward mechanism to ensure that the assets within your Silver Bullion Account can be easily converted into cash and transferred to your Linked Bank Account upon notification of your passing. Consequently, this ensures that your assets with Silver Bullion become readily accessible to your estate administrator or executor for distribution to your intended beneficiaries.

Examples of what the Transfer On Death instruction does NOT do:

a)It does not directly transfer ownership of the precious metals to your beneficiaries.
b)It does not replace or override your will, trust, or other estate planning documents that specify how your assets should be distributed among heirs.
c)It does not involve designating specific beneficiaries for the precious metals themselves.
d)It does not complicate your control over your assets during your lifetime; you can buy, sell, or modify your holdings as usual.
e)It does not affect the ownership of your precious metals while you are alive.

What if something happens to me due to unforeseen circumstances? How can my loved ones or my attorney gain access to my metal?

If you pass away, we will follow your Transfer on Death (TOD) instruction (if enabled), which directs us to liquidate your holdings, settle outstanding obligations, and transfer the remaining balance to your Linked Bank Account.

If TOD is not enabled, we will follow the following instructions:

a)In the event of your death, from your authorized executor or administrator, upon receiving the necessary legal documentation.
b)A certified true copy of the death certificate of the deceased.
c)Grant of Probate (if there is a will), or
d)Letters of Administration (if there is no will).
e)If you become mentally incapacitated from a legally appointed guardian or holder of a valid power of attorney, subject to verification and approval.

Once we are notified of such circumstances, your account will be frozen until the necessary legal processes are completed.

What happens if Silver Bullion (Hong Kong) Ltd can no longer fulfil its role as my agent?

Silver Bullion is in a strong financial position and operates in one of the safest jurisdictions in the world. However, any well-designed system must still make business continuity provisions for such an eventuality. The S.T.A.R. Gram system is designed so that your ownership claim remains clear no matter what happens.

The S.T.A.R. Gram structure also has a direct, built-in safeguard: you legally own a fractional interest in specifically identified bullion bars. If Silver Bullion (Hong Kong) Ltd, who acts as your agent (as distinct from the Vault Operator), can no longer fulfil this duty, and the liquidator process fails, you can claim your property directly under law.

Your S.T.A.R. Gram holdings clearly record your S.T.A.R. account ID and your fractional interest in the specific identified bullion bar(s) you own. While the Vault Operator only holds your S.T.A.R. account ID on record, your tax invoice and the statement of holdings lists your S.T.A.R. account ID, full name, and address alongside your gram holdings making your legal claim to your share of the bullion clear and unequivocal.

While both entities are part of the same corporate group, client accounts, KYC records, and product eligibility are administered independently by each entity.

The underlying vaulting, audits, and ownership records for S.T.A.R. Grams sit within Silver Bullion’s Singapore-based storage framework, in keeping with our Exclusive Singapore Jurisdiction protection the same framework used for SBSG’s own clients.

Can I convert my personal/joint S.T.A.R. Storage account to another personal/joint S.T.A.R. Storage account and vice versa?

Can I use S.T.A.R. Grams for P2P loans?

Can I buy physical bullion from Silver Bullion (Hong Kong) Limited?

We do not currently sell physical bullion to clients in Hong Kong. To purchase physical bullion (bars and coins), you can register an account under Silver Bullion Pte Ltd, where you can collect or store the bullion in Singapore.

About S.T.A.R. Grams

What is S.T.A.R. Grams?

S.T.A.R. Grams represent fractional ownership of real physical precious metals (e.g. gold, silver, platinum) stored in The Reserve, our high-security vault. Each gram corresponds to a recorded percentage of specific bars that already exist, have been tested, and are fully accounted for.

You are not buying a paper claim or a future promise. You are buying legal ownership of metal that is already in storage.

Do I really own the metal, and is it on Silver Bullion’s balance sheet?

Yes. With S.T.A.R. Grams, you are the legal owner of your specific portion of the bars. Your ownership is recorded as a percentage of specific bars.

Because the portion of the metal belongs to you and not to the company, it is not included on Silver Bullion’s balance sheet. It is treated as your property held in storage. If something were to happen to the company, the metal remains yours and is not considered company assets.

Is this how other fractional precious metal programs work?

Not always. Some providers structure their programs differently. In some cases:

a)the “backing” is the company’s trading inventory
b)the same inventory may still be available for sale
c)part of the backing may be metal ordered from suppliers that has not yet arrived

In periods of high demand, this can lead to delays because customer balances depend on future deliveries.

S.T.A.R. Grams are structured so that bars allocated to S.T.A.R. clients are dedicated to those clients and are not reused for other trading activities.

How are S.T.A.R. Grams different from unallocated gold, silver, or platinum?

Unallocated programs usually mean you do not own specific metal. You hold a claim against the provider. That can mean:

a)metal may not exist in full at all times
b)you are effectively an unsecured creditor
c)your balance may be mixed with company operations

With S.T.A.R. Grams:

a)you own specific bars by percentage
b)your metal is not on our balance sheet
c)it is not lent out or re-pledged
d)audits and authenticity testing support the structure

Your grams represent real bars, not an IOU.

Is S.T.A.R. Grams a pooled account?

Multiple clients may share ownership of the same bar, but each owner has a clearly tracked percentage. The bar is never double counted and is not used for other purposes.

This is different from generic “pooled” accounts where the provider simply claims to hold enough metal overall.

How many grams are in a troy ounce (oz)?

Your S.T.A.R. Gram holdings are denominated in grams a globally standard, easy-to-understand unit of weight. Grams are the unit you will see across your account, statements, and transactions with Silver Bullion.

Spot prices for precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) are internationally quoted per troy ounce (“oz”), the standard pricing unit used across global bullion markets. The conversion below lets you translate your gram holdings into troy ounces, so you can compare your holding value against quoted spot prices.

Gram to troy ounce conversion:

a)1 gram = 0.03215 troy oz
b)10 grams = 0.3215 troy oz
c)100 grams = 3.215 troy oz
d)1,000 grams (1 kg) = 32.15 troy oz

(Reference: 1 troy ounce = 31.103 grams)

Backing and Transparency

How are the bars backing S.T.A.R. Grams tracked?

The backing is tracked through Gramchain, our blockchain-based Proof-of-Reserves system.

Every bar placed into storage is:

a)uniquely identified
b)photographed
c)weighed and tested
d)assigned a digital record
e)linked to its location and ownership percentages

These records are written into a blockchain database to prevent silent tampering. Clients can view the bars supporting S.T.A.R. holdings, helping verify that the metal exists, is inside the vault, and has not been double counted.

Where can I see the bars backing my S.T.A.R. Grams and my portion of them?

You can view the bars backing your S.T.A.R. Grams through the Gramchain explorer. Inside your account, go to Manage Holdings. There, you will see the bars that support your S.T.A.R. Grams, along with details such as bar serial numbers, weights, testing information, storage location, and the recorded percentages.

You can also explore the public Gramchain records.

Gramchain lets you independently verify that:

a)the bars exist
b)they are stored in the vault
c)they are tied to S.T.A.R. holdings
d)they are not double counted or reused

It gives you visibility instead of just relying on trust.

Buying and Selling

Can I set up automatic purchases or dollar cost averaging?

Yes. You can click “Manage recurring buys for S.T.A.R. Grams” and choose how much to buy, what metal to buy, and how often to buy it. If there is not enough money in your Cash Balance, the purchase simply does not happen. You can cancel and edit the recurrences anytime.

What does “Pre-Order” mean, and why does it happen?

“Pre-Order” appears when all currently allocated S.T.A.R. bars have already been fully assigned to clients.

Because S.T.A.R. Grams must always be fully backed, the completion of orders is paused until new bars arrive. The bars are then tested, recorded in Gramchain, and allocated. Once the bullion is physically available, the order is completed.

Why do some other providers rarely show Pre-Orders?

In some programs, customer balances are linked to inventory still being sold or to metal that has been ordered but not yet delivered. This allows continuous selling, but it means backing may rely on future supply.

S.T.A.R. Grams segregate the bullion backing the program. Once allocated, it cannot be separately sold or reused while it remains allocated.

How Can I Place Sell Orders Online?

This allows all customers to receive the same transparent and efficient trading experience.

Our customer support team is available: Mondays to Fridays: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm.

How Will I Receive payment For My Sellbacks?

For S.T.A.R. Gram sellbacks, the system will automatically close the sellback and credit the fund into the customer’s cash balance. Upon your fund withdrawal request, payment is typically made via bank transfer to your designated bank account after 2-5 business days. Normally it will take longer for the larger sellback transactions.

In accordance with our Terms of Service, we will be required to collect all necessary information from the customer for AML/KYC purposes before entering into a transaction. Please note that we strictly cannot send proceeds to a third-party bank account.

Storage Fees

How are storage fees calculated and charged for S.T.A.R. Grams?

Storage fees are calculated every day and accrue over time. They are always deducted in grams, from your S.T.A.R. Grams balance. Storage is only deducted monthly when the accrued amount reaches 0.01 grams or more. If the amount for that month is below 0.01 grams, nothing is deducted that month and the accrual continues.

There is also a yearly minimum storage amount, and it is different by metal:

a)0.1 grams per year for gold
b)0.1 grams per year for platinum
c)10 grams per year for silver

If, by the end of the year, your total deductions are below these amounts, we deduct the difference once at year end. If you sell back or redeem your grams, any accrued storage that has not yet been deducted will be settled first.

You can review the official storage rates.

How does the monthly storage deduction work?

Storage accrues every day. It is deducted monthly only if the accrued amount reaches at least 0.01 grams.

MonthAccrued During MonthMonth Deduction
January0.010 grams0.010 grams will be deducted
February0.006 gramsNothing is deducted this month
March0.004 grams0.010 grams will be deducted

Anything not deducted continues accruing and is handled under the annual minimum. All deductions are always in grams and reduce your S.T.A.R. Grams balance.

What happens to storage if I sell my grams during the month?

Storage still accrues. If you sell during the month, whatever has accrued is deducted first, then the rest is sold.

Your balance50.000 g
Accrued storage0.007 g
Deducted for storage0.007 g
Net Grams Sold49.993 g

How does the annual minimum storage deduction work?

If your storage for the year is very small, there is a yearly minimum.

Minimums are:

a)0.1 grams per year for gold
b)0.1 grams per year for platinum
c)10 grams per year for silver

Example: below the minimum (gold)

Total deducted during the year0.060 g
Annual minimum0.100 g
Extra deducted at year-end0.040 g

Example: above the minimum (gold)

Total deducted during the year0.180 g
Annual minimum0.100 g
Extra deducted at year-end0.000 g

Redemption

Can I redeem my grams into physical bars?

Currently, Silver Bullion (Hong Kong) does not sell physical bars, redemption is not available until further notice. You would sell back your grams at spot without extra sellback fee.

Can I redeem into other grams for example, from gold grams to silver grams?

There is no direct conversion between metals. To move from gold grams to silver grams, you would sell back your gold grams at spot (with no extra sellback fee) and separately use the resulting cash balance to purchase silver grams, subject to prevailing pricing and availability.

Can I Cancel My Order?

Once an Order or Sellback has been submitted, prices are locked in, and a legally binding agreement is formed between you and Silver Bullion for the purchase or sale of precious metals or other products.

As market prices can fluctuate rapidly, Silver Bullion may immediately undertake transactions, hedging activities, or other arrangements based on your Order or Sellback. For this reason, orders and sellbacks are considered final and cannot be cancelled.

We understand that exceptional circumstances may occasionally arise. At our sole discretion, we may consider requests to cancel an Order or Sellback on a case-by-case basis. Any approved cancellation will be subject to our Market Loss Policy, together with a Cancellation Fee based on the Order or Sellback value.

Cancellation fees are calculated as 5% of the Order or Sellback total, or HKD 500 (whichever is higher), together with Market Loss charges.

Learn more about our Cancellation and Market Loss Policy.

How Do I Request a Cancellation?

Cancellation requests must be submitted via Secure Notification Message during our normal business hours. Please note that cancellation requests are only considered under exceptional circumstances, and approval is not guaranteed.

Can Another Person, Company, or Trust Pay for My Order?

No. This is strictly prohibited. To comply with anti-money laundering (AML) and Know-Your-Customer (KYC) requirements, payments must originate from a bank account that matches the ownership of your Silver Bullion account. Third-party payments are not accepted.

The permitted payment source depends on your account type.

You can send us funds first following the payment details in the Payment Options page.

Once we have received your funds, we will inform you. When you think the price is right, you can submit an order by pressing “Buy” S.T.A.R. Grams. You need to press “Confirm” within 30 seconds so that the price can be locked and thus the order has been submitted.

Method 2. Submit an order to buy and send us the full payment within 2 business days.

When you want to buy, select the item, click on the “Buy” and confirm the order. After that, you are required to send us the full payment within 2 business days following the payment details above.

Why Doesn’t Your Bank Account have an IBAN?

Hong Kong bank accounts do not use the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) system. Instead, international wire transfers to Hong Kong are typically routed using the bank’s SWIFT/BIC code together with the recipient’s bank account number. For transfers to our bank account, the SWIFT code and account number are sufficient to identify the destination account. Please refer to the full banking instructions on our Payment Options page before initiating your transfer.

What Currency Can We Make Our Purchases In?

Orders can be priced and settled in HKD, USD or CNY. For full details on our payment method, you may refer to our Payment Options page.

What is the Silver Spot Price, and Why Do Prices Change?

The silver spot price is the current market price at which silver can be bought or sold for immediate settlement. It is typically quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.103 grams). Spot prices are determined by global precious metals markets and are influenced by trading activity across major financial centres, including London, New York, and Hong Kong. As these markets operate and prices fluctuate throughout the day, the silver spot price can change continuously.

To reflect current market conditions, we update our prices regularly. This ensures that our pricing remains aligned with the prevailing market value of silver.

In addition, many of our products can be purchased in currencies other than US dollars. As a result, our prices may also change when foreign exchange rates move, even if the underlying silver spot price remains unchanged.

Why Hasn’t the Silver Spot Price Been Updated?

The silver spot price is only updated while major precious metals exchanges are open. During weekends and certain holidays, markets such as COMEX are closed, so the spot price remains unchanged until trading resumes.

Why is Silver Priced Above The Spot Price?

Understanding Premiums

The spot price reflects the market value of wholesale silver traded in global financial markets. Physical silver bullion typically sells at a premium to the spot price because additional costs are incurred to produce, transport, and deliver the metal.

These costs may include:

a)Refining, minting, and assaying bullion products
b)Secure transportation and insurance

As a result, physical bullion products generally trade above the underlying silver spot price. The premium is the price the buyer pays above the spot price.

It is also important to distinguish between physical silver and paper silver products. Physical bullion represents direct ownership of a tangible asset, while paper silver products primarily provide exposure to silver prices through financial instruments. For long-term investors, physical silver offers the benefit of direct ownership without reliance on a counterparty. However, because physical bullion involves manufacturing, logistics, and distribution costs, it will typically carry a premium over the spot price.

The premium on bullion varies depending on factors such as the product type, manufacturer, market demand, inventory availability, and prevailing supply conditions. While bullion products carry a premium above the underlying metal value, these premiums are generally modest compared to retail silver products such as jewellery, where a significant portion of the price may reflect craftsmanship, branding, and retail mark-ups rather than metal content. In line with economies of scale, larger bullion products typically command lower premiums per ounce than smaller products, making them a more cost-effective way to acquire precious metals.

More on “Paper Silver”

The exact ratio between physical silver and paper silver exposure is not known and depends on how “paper silver” is defined. Estimates vary widely because they may include futures contracts, options, derivatives, unallocated accounts, leasing arrangements, and other forms of exposure. Some analysts argue that paper claims may exceed physical silver by many multiples, and it is a safe assumption that there are somewhere between 10 and 100 paper derivative claims for every ounce of physical silver. While they tend to be a popular option for online trading due to lower transaction costs, it carries significant counterparty risk.

In this context, the simplicity of direct physical bullion ownership and the absence of counterparty risk make it well suited as a long-term hedge against inflation, currency debasement, and broader financial instability. Physical bullion may also benefit during periods of declining confidence in financial institutions or complex financial products.
